the first rule of elf club

our team- linda, the giant farang, nong, kim

yesterday we started our pilot after-school program called elf club. it's pretty baller. first of all, we held it in an old musty muy thai gym at the school so it's more like fight club. second of all, the teachers loved it so much they asked us to come back every week. thirdly, i got a gig teaching english once a week. we are using elf club as a time to build relationships with girls and brainwash them, i mean talk to them, about their lives, their futures and help with school and english. scholarships alone will not help because the schools are underfunded and there are huge holes in the curriculum. at the last event we did one of the girls said she wanted to be a doctor when she grows up but she wasn't planning on attending high school. yeah. there are some pretty basic things we can communicate that will go a long way.

i am also hoping that some women who used to work in the bars and have since quit and been rehabilitated will come and talk to our girls about the dangers of the sex industry. too many thai girls are going willingly or at least naively into prostitution because it seems to be a way out of poverty. but not elf club girls! they will know everything (!) and just say no to prostitution. it is a small start -- one school out of the 63 we sponsor-- but a worthwhile one. plus, it's fun.
