people ask me sometimes why i don't start my own organization, my own effort to change the world. well, it's because a) i haven't had any compelling or innovative ideas thus far b) there are so many damn fine ideas out there i need to learn to work first. a few i came across today:
goodness 500- ranks US companies based on their donations and corporate responsibility. top 5:
1 | Financial Services | Principal Financial Group, Inc. | $62,000,000 | |||||
| 2 | Financial Services | Wells Fargo & Company | $120,000,000 | |||||
| 3 | Consumer Discretionary | Starbucks Corporation | $28,400,000 | |||||
| 4 | Financial Services | Northern Trust Corporation | $15,400,000 | |||||
| 5 | Consumer Discretionary | Gap, Inc. (The) | $14,031,253 |
do good- an iphone app and blog that encourages people to perform the same act of kindness on the same day. okay, so now i have to get an iphone. for the kids. it's all about helpin' those kids...
causecast- twitter feed, blog and online community of social innovators and their causes.
osocio- for my design-inclined friends, this blog collects social advertising and media from around the world. pretty sure they are dying to feature the brochures i'm making for elf... out of posterboard and glue. cause the internet's been done, really. but poster board? that's hip.
social media has been rocking my world recently (new friends! pretty pictures! twitter recipes from martha!), and i have access to so much now it's overwhelming. at the same time i'm discouraged that all i do is just sit here and gape at all the cool stuff other people are doing. one day i will master it and the universe will be my plaything.
another wonderful shepherd fairey print via osocio.

You know what's interesting about that list? While those companies in the top five, and even beyond them gave upmti-millions, it still only totalled 1-3% of their profit. Who gave the largest percentage you ask, Harrahs Casino! They gave 9.2% away! They didn't just out give, they out gave and there is a 6% difference between them and the next closest company. Never would have guessed that one.
Dang that is good reason to get an iphone. Really the first compelling argument i've heard so far. Congratulations!
